I thought he would propose on my birthday, September 29, 2001, however he had other plans. My twin sister and I decided to throw each other a party, just something different and funny for our 26th birthday....
We cooked a feast had a few friends and family over to a party in our home. My sister who had been married for 3 years now, had her husband there as did everyone of our guests who were involved in relationships. My boyfriend at the time, Jay, hardly spent anytime with me at my own party and then left early because he said he 'had to go to work to finish up a project.' Well, his position allowed him access to an AVID machine where he could digitally create a video with sound effects, nature effects as well as incorporate Kodak pictures. This was a position through our church which he had become a member of once moving to Cleveland from Youngstown. That night he expresed to me his responsibility of finishing work on the church's ministry program which airs on a daily basis nationwide. I was livid that my boyfriend wasn't at my own party and my friends constantly reminded me of his early departure by asking, "Where is Jay?" Needless to say, it wasn't the best birthday I could remember as the night had progressed on. He hadn't even called me that night to let me know he was sorry to have to leave. Totally out of his character. As our guests thanked us for a wonderful time and departed, my uncle asked what was my wish for this birthday, I simply said, For Jay to be here and for him to propose.
The next Morning was Sunday. Jay & I normally ride to church together. As I was putting on my suit, and preparing for service, I received a telephone call which was Mr. -Have-To-Work-Late-On-Your-Birthday. Of course, I answered the call without joy in my voice and it immediately turned into anger as he preceded to tell me that he wasn't attending service that morning. Instead he was going to his hometown, to attend to some family matters. As I hung the phone on the receiver I made the determination to have a good day despite the actions of the man who had been promising to marry me hadn't proposed in 3 years and couldn't spend time with me the weekend of my birthday.
I went to church and assisted in our church's Tape & Book Store. When the store closed, I took my seat in service as the Pastor directed our attention to the two big telescreens facing the congregation. I thought they were going to show the renovations being made on the land we had just purchased for our new church. To my surprise, a soft melody came across the speakers as a scene developed of clouds wisping across calm sunsets. Words danced across this pistureque scene exclaiming how much a certain person had meant to another. I thought, wow that's nice. After this introduction was complete, I then began to see familiar vacation, family, and candid photographs of Jay & I. I immediately knew Jay was behind this. As my eyes were frozen on the pictures clicking by, I heard a roar of applause and echos of gasps as thousands saw Jay stroll down the middle aisle in a handsome suit looking as clean cut as the day of our wedding. He came to my seat, took my hand and lead me to the front of our church with over 1,200 people looking on. As the video ended, we walked up into the pulpit and he began to tell my family members how much they meant to him especially since he had moved here away from his home. He then bent down on one knee and began to describe in detail how much I meant to him and how he looked forward to spending the rest of his life with me. I was floored! My knees were weak, my hands were covering my face, and I felt elation fill my entire body. After I nearly cut off his circulation by hugging him around the neck, I accepted his proposal and the congregation stood and applauded as almost no eye remained dry.
We've been married now for 6 months and the excitement from that very day hasn't ceased.
