Wedding Cake No No's

Anyone with wedding cake no no's they'd like to share? Here's mine:

Huge tower wedding cakes can be very attractive. But did you know that they tend to topple over a lot? Please avoid this scenario.

Jenna Bush Wedding 2008

I'm sure this cake was very expensive, but it kind of resembles the "Leaning Tower of Pisa."...and I don't think they were going for the Italy theme.

O.K. I'm walking to the corner, but I said my piece. ;oD

Re: Wedding Cake No No's

I guess that this was a good idea at the time when someone thought it up, but it just looks creepy. And you can forget about saving the top tier:

Heck, yeah it's creepy. Look at how he's watching at it as he's cutting into it. She looks like she's about to burst into tears.

Do you really eat the top tier a year later?

Re: Wedding Cake No No's

mycenae1918, yes. Traditionally the top tier is saved for the first anniversary. You take it home and wrap it VERY well and place it in the freezer so when your first anniversary comes around your cake will taste like it did when you first nibbled it on your wedding day. Some bakeries will freeze it for you and delivery it when your anniversary comes around OR bake you a top tier at no additional charge.

Re: Wedding Cake No No's

VIPrincessBride, That cake is called a Topsy Turvy Cake and it's supposed to lean. They have become really popular. You can see more cake designs in our Cake Gallery.

Butterbean that is just the weirdest thing I have ever seen! But I won't even put a flat image of me or my family on food. Just don't like the whole take a bite out of me concept! lol

Re: Wedding Cake No No's

Hi Rosetta,

I looked at the "Topsy turvy" cakes and I can tell that one layer leans in one direction and the other layer leans in the other direction and so forth, so it looks kinda Dr. Seusish. However, with Jenna Bush's cake, it looks to me like only the top layer has that gangsta lean, which makes me doubt that it's a "topsy turvy" cake but really a big ole mistake.

I just found this article that mentions that the top tier had started to fall.

Jenna Bush's Wedding Cake

and check out this blog..the writer was reading my mind.

and check out the comments from "Son of a Baker":

"The tilt was NOT intentional!! Mary Jane Ontiveroz of the Ultimate Cheesecake in San Antonio decorated and delivered this cake. She has over 40+ years handling cakes. The cake, a combination tres leches/dulche de leche, did in fact have whipped icing. This is a very popular cake in south Texas and she has a lot of experience with it. The cake had all the necessary supports and was set-up completely straight. When Mary Jane asked where the floral was, she was told the florist would be finishing the cake. Mary Jane insisted to assist or do the floral herself! She was told that was not an option and escorted out by secret service ( not before getting a quick photo with George who was in the tent ). Our only guess is, the topper was to heavy or the florist did not use a ladder to place the arrangement directly in the center. Long story short

Re: Wedding Cake No No's

Oh, there's several Pamcrow: The height of the cake combined with the whipped or buttercreme icing in the outdoor heat (that's never a good idea) also combined with a possible florist who may not have known what she was doing or a possible too heavy topper. It all spelled DISASTER. All of some of the cake could have ended up on the floor.

Um and there have been cakes from Walmart that have stood tall! they had some nerve. If I was doing something like that I would be too nervous.

Re: Wedding Cake No No's

Mycenae, we ate our wedding cake top layer a year later and it was delicious. Publix, a large local grocery chain has an excellent bakery and they are getting better with new designs yearly.

We were skeptical because our friends' wedding cake from a more expensive bakery was not good a year later..They said it tasted like cardboard. My WC had us wrap it in many layers of saran wrap, foil, and then plastic bags to keep the air out. We defrosted it 1 day in the fridge and me, DH, my sister and his family enjoyed it.

We had already decided that if it was nasty, we would just order a 6 or 8-inch version of the same cake...But it turned out nice...Even the frosting was great. So the key is wrapping it well....But in hindsight, because we didn't get to enjoy much cake at the wedding due to the mingling, we wanted to and should have eaten it after the wedding when we returned from the honeymoon and ordered another on our anniversary cause it took up a lot of freezer space...But either way it was still delicious!

Re: Wedding Cake No No's

This is true. Also some smaller family owned bakeries can whip up a beautiful cake. Sometimes it is just a name. I am dont think much of the taste. I am thining of the look. I mean I think I will have other deserts at the reception.

Re: Wedding Cake No No's

I dont think the couple ever found this cake:

I love this webpage,Uglyweddingcake.com ,even though I disagree with one of the posters swearing off all cupcake towers just because he chose an untalented baker to create his.

Re: Wedding Cake No No's

Butterbean,

I agree. Cupcake wedding cakes can look very nice. As a matter of fact, I saw some BEAUTIFUL stands in TJMax the other day. They were gorgeous silver type metal with crystal drops hanging from the plates. I was tempted to buy them b/c they were so beautiful and thought maybe I could use them at Christmas or something.

That site is wild.

I hear cupcake cakes are all the thing. Cant you save on the cake cutting fee with a cupcake cake. I am having a regular cake because it is included with the reception.

Re: Wedding Cake No No's

My cake is pretty normal as well as it is 5-tiers. I'm using my friend, who's also a vendor that I use very often as my couples fall in love with her cakes as soon as they taste them. She's giving me a huge 50% off on that. And yes, I do plan on saving my top layer to share with my husband a year later.

Re: Wedding Cake No No's

Ginuoe. Does having cupcakes save you the cake cutting fee or is there a per person charge to serve the cake?

Re: Wedding Cake No No's

You probably can get a hostess or your WC to just put them on plates!

I didn't have a cake-cutting fee b/c one of my WC's did that and it was included as part of their services.

Re: Wedding Cake No No's

Bumble answered your question correctly, you can save on cake cutting fee by having someone else cut the rest of the cake one you and your husband have your slices. They can't charge you for services that you're not using. Make sure that you read and re-read the contract from your venue (reception hall) and be sure to ask questions until you're cleared that what you want will happen. Mycenae, I think you said that you had a coordinator, just ask him/her if she/he would mind very much cutting the rest of your cake and wrapping the top layer for you to enjoy on your anniversary. Bumble has a wonderful method for saving that is absolutely perfect.
