Cake Ideas

Considering my budget, I am trying to be as creative as possible. I was thinking about buying a small wedding cake and a sheet cake to serve our guests. I've tasted sheet cakes that are done at the supermarket and they taste better than the ones you buy at the bakery. Ladies what are your thoughts. I want to be careful not to come across as being tacky. I welcome your input. Thanks.

Re: Cake Ideas

I'm having the same struggle. I've heard that the bakeries can make several "fake" layers instead. I am probably going to do the same thing. As long as a great slice of cake gets around to everyone, no one will really care. At least I hope not. FYI - I went to a very expensive wedding in Alexandria MD a few weeks ago and the cake was pretty. But it tasted horrible!!! I would have been so angry to have spent that much money and had icing two inches thick taste like lard!!!

Re: Cake Ideas

Have a dummy cake made so that guests can see and you can take pics cutting the cake. Then have sheet cake from Walmart, supermarket, etc served. We have grat articles on how to save and choose your wedding cake on vibride.com.
Add the perfect finishing touch with beautiful Bridal Jewelry.

Re: Cake Ideas

My girlfriend suggested that I go with her to this bakery and sample their cakes. Oh my goodness it was awesome. The cake that I liked the best was a red velvet cake. Has anyone ever had a red velvet cake at their wedding?

Re: Cake Ideas

That's good Marquita -- what style of groom cake is your FH having. My FH teaches marching band in his spare time and he wants a cake that has something to do with that. I don't know exactly how I'm going to pull that one off -- I'm open to suggestions.

His cake will be an open Bible. For your sweetie, have you considered musical notes, instruments or a treble clef perhaps?

Re: Cake Ideas

My fiance is an Alpha and wants a red velvet cake that is in the shape of a pyramid. Gold on the outside of course. I guess some sort of coloring could just be added to the icing.

Re: Cake Ideas

Hampton_S a pyramid cake -- I think that is awesome. The whole Egyption theme, I know that will be so beautiful. In the beginning I thought it was strange to have a red velvet cake, because I never heard of it done before. I am glad that I decided to go with what I really want and it's nice to see that others have the same great taste!! Red velvet here I come!!!!!!

Re: Cake Ideas

FH and I met with our cake baker last week and I'll describe them best as can. His cake: 2 layer sheet cake. Bottom layer chocolate cake with chocolate icing. Top layer is smaller than bottom and is red velvet cake with cream cheese icing. Top layer is shape of open Bible. Ribbon will be page divider and chocolate or fudge icing will be used to write his favorite Bible verse on the cake. My cake: 3 tier white cake, with rolled fondant icing, with strawberry (absolutely delicious), and intricate lacy pattern around the bottom of each layer. Silk flowers b/w 1st and 2nd tier, and cute cake toppper on top. I definitely recommend a tasting when picking out cakes. Our lady let us taste and provided us both with cups of milk and I had myself a ball!!

You have done a great job Marquita in describing your cakes. I'm sure they will be absolutely stunning to the eye and delicious! Yum, yum, I am partial to red velvet cakes! I will be visiting some bakers in the very near future!

Help....

Hi,

I have chosen my cake but I am having trouble coordinating my colors into the cake. I have come up with some suggestions but none of them sound right. My colors are chocolate, light blue, and cream.

Here is a link to a picture of the cake:
http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=3E30A675-475A-BAC0-525BB0AADDF3EB94&fid=3E32AEA9-475A-BAC0-5A57BB27FD2A4B5E

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Cake Ideas

Is this the cake?

Have you thought of decorating the cake with cream and/or light blue flowers? Or the cream and/or chocolate? Or you can do just one solid color. What does your florist think?

Re: Cake Ideas

Yes, this is the cake. I initially wanted to do the top and bottom layer chocolate and the middle cream with cream dots but the chocolate is a really dark color so I didn't want it to look like crap. I am leaning more to just a cream but I wanted to add some color to the cake. Do you suggest the cream cake with cream dots and either blue or chocolate roses?

The person doing the cake really isn't helping because she says it is what I want. My wedding is next Saturday so I need to make a decision....We should have just gone to the courthouse...lol.

Re: Cake Ideas

It's not ghetto to do a faux layer as the bottom layer of the cake right? I mean if they decorate it just like the other layers, can you tell?

I really want a big cake like three or four tiers, but I don't need that much cake.

I can see icing sliding down the side of the fake layer revealing...a cardboard box...AAAAHAHAHH. How embarrassed would I be?!?

Re: Cake Ideas

It's kind of hard to find a picture of those. You might want to check with your local Bakeries in your area. I know that it would cost a pretty penny because creating a castle is so time consuming. Good luck to you though.
