Re: Making a Cake

Even if you make a cake, you still need some serious professional tools, Special Pans, and Spatulas of different sizes, frosting bags and tips for decorating are needed, as well as stands. You have to make sure that if you don't have a convection oven, that your oven is calibrated correctly....A few degrees off can create problems! I just got a Kitchen Aid Stand-up mixer because I am looking to improve my skills, and those things are expensive!....not to mention the space in the fridge to house the cake, and then traveling and putting it together-much less trusting someone to do it!....and you wonder why wedding cakes are so expensive! But thats one LESS thing to think about! Once I get good, I am charging your arm and your leg for me do do your wedding cake!

Re: Making a Cake

I'm resorting to buying the cake for the wedding, but I gotta say...baking is fun! I've tried a white cake this time and the cake came out just fine. I've found a recipe for a Bailey Irish Creme Cake. I'm going to give that a spin. Of course, I'll have to crank up my work-out regiment.

The hard thing about these specialty cakes is that they have to be tested often...I am working on a lemon cookie that has white chocolate chips in them and the recipe didn't work as well...the cookies were delicious, but they didn't have that crunch I like....they were more like tea cakes to me....Soft, and smooth...so of course I will try another recipe and see what I can get....so good luck....maybe you can use your cakes as centerpiece or a grooms cakesSmile What a sweet/personal touch for your wedding!

Re: Making a Cake

I love soft cookies to the point to where I snack on homemade cookie dough.

My wedding wont be until sometime around March of 09' for many reasons. I have plenty of time to practice, however, I tend to become easily bored with certain projects and just bail out altogether. If I can't put together a whole practice wedding cake by September, then I'll buy a cake. I just feel that making my own cake would be the ultimate gangsta DIY thing for any bride to do for their own wedding and Im up for the challenge.
Haha. I can see me punking out like I did with the champagne cake by the week's end.

There you go trendsetting again. I consider myself a DIY Queen but doing my own wedding cake would have been waaayyy to much pressure for me. Especially since I'm known to be a perfectionist. I wish you much luck on this one.

Re: Making a Cake

My wedding is going to be a semi-formal, afternoon, family affair with no professional wedding planners, so I feel that I can get away with some imperfections. I'll try not to be as bad as that ghetto outdoor wedding pictures with the dry icingless cakes on pedestals. *I assume that those pictures have circulated around these forums by now*

Re: Making a Cake

There are absolutely no words for that cake!! But you may be able to get a cake cheaper than you think Butterbean. I am having the cake that I really love done for only $300.00! The lady who is doing the cake for me comes highly recommended by the owner of the hall where my reception will be held. I guess he refers everyone to this lady because she is so good! She has been in the business for over 30 yrs, and she works from home. And let me tell you, her cakes are delicious!! So we were really blessed with the price of our cake. I get the cake I really want for a really good price. So you never know, shop around, you may find a lovely cake for the price you want to pay!

Re: Making a Cake

another idea is to go to Sam's and get their round cakes (undecorated) because they will sell them like that and if you use the pedestal setup (minus the foil) it will look great because even though all the cakes are the same size, the pedestal height will make it look good! my friend did it for her wedding and it was beautiful...the only reason I didn't do it is because I had that setup (pedestal) with my last wedding-and I am trying to do things SOOOOO different! Re: Making a Cake

Girl that cake is a mess. All you need is a good cake spatula and some Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines Vanilla Frosting to slap some icing on those cakes! They could have picked some flowers from around the yard or dropped by the dollar store to decorate the thing!

Re: Making a Cake

I suspect that this was a DIY cake instead of faulty cake assembley by a baker, but I still love this story:

http://www.uglydress.c...ycakestory.html

As for trying this myself, Im stepping down because: #1- Im feeling the weight gain from eating my cakes #2-FH is too #3-We were at a bridal show and we tried the best champange strawberry cake from a vendor. So we are going to book them when we see them at a fall bridal show and take full advantage of their 20% off bridal show discount.

Re: Making a Cake

Wow, that cake looks pathetic! I would rather have no cake at all on display than to have that disaster of a cake for everyone to see. I would have had the cake cut up in the back, so the guests would have only seen the cake after it had been sliced up...lol! And I would also be in court just as she is suing to get my money back. But anyways, a champagne strawberry cake sounds delicious! I have never heard of this flavor until now. YummySmile

Lord have messy... I have never seen anything like it. I feel so sorry for the poor bride - I wouldn't even have had it anywhere near my reception.
