I have a friend that's on the Mirena and she said that she's fine with it. Talk at length with your OBGYN and see what's best for you.
I was gonna get on Mirena but my husband was with me when I went to the GYN and he tried to tell five years was too long so we went with Femcon which is a pill. Mirena is IUD and I have heard they sometimes get stuck to far in uterus and my grandmother had to get hers removed years ago because her tissue started growing around it. Everyones body is different and I still think I might use it behind hubby's back but for now I am sticking with the pills.

O.K. That sounds pretty scary!

My grandmother is 70 and when she got hers put in at 28 years old it was metal and then when they started fixing them they made them plastic and they are calling them IUC instead of IUD. But most recently my neighbor had her plastic one removed from being out of place but they were not sure how it happened. I guess that's why they say have extensive talks with your doctor.

Hey sweetp i am on the mirena and i had it fitted a couple of months ago, and so far it seems okay. By the way..there is a thread called 'Birth Control' which we already had in the past which covers this topic quite well. Mirena is pretty new so I dont think its the same version that Mrs080908's gran had put in because that was too long ago!! I even had another IUD a few years ago and didnt have problems with it!! Mirena is brand spanking new, and it has a light dose of hormones unlike previous ones, which will also lighten your period..or in some women remove it all together. This is perfect for me because i also suffered from really heavy periods on the old method. 5 years is fine for me because i plan on having kids in about 3 or 4 years, and can remove it at any time and get pregnant immediately God willing. Speak to your doctor about it and see what they have to say, but it suited my needs and my profile
good luck
Yeah Mirena is just ONE brand of IUD. There are many....I have never used an IUD, nor do I want one, but I have heard some horror stories. At the same time, many of my breastfeeding clients use it with no problems....That particular brand is recommended for its low hormone dosage (which is preferable if breastfeeding-cause some birth control decreases milk supply), plus if you are not a pill person, then its better for you.....
However I think that long-term usage of anything can be risky. I think that you may be better off using it for 4-5 years then switch for a while to give your body a break....Many people used the pill with no problem, but after years of using it, they finally start getting some of the side effects...But its your body's way of rejecting foriegn hormones, materials, etc.....So from time to time your body needs a break....
The newer IUD's cannot be used past 5 years anyways...And the metal ones from before were too dangerous anyways...But at any rate, talk to your doctor, and ALWAYS follow the directions to the T! Any deviation from its intended use, positioning (patch), regimen, can cause the product to fail or cause reactions.....

I'm on Mirena and I love it. I get a period about every other month and it lasts for only an hour or two. I had the ParaGuard IUD a couple years ago and hated it. I was on a constant period for a little over a year and I gained weight. I was in the military at that time and working out everyday and couldn't lose the weight. I've had Mirena for 2 years now. So far so good.

I've had more than my share of irregularities but Woah! No way! Weren't you anemic?

No, I wasn't anemic. It was mostly like heavy spotting. But the cramps and bloating- an enire year! The doctor kept saying my body just needed to get used to the IUD.
That was with ParaGuard. Mirena has been wonderful for me.
