Hello again ladies,
My wedding ceremony will be held in a Baptist Church. One of the rules for the ceremony is "No Secular Music". I did some research on secular music, and it is music that does not glorify god, love, etc..
This is where I am confused. I know there are certain songs that are not appropriate in a church, like songs that talk about sex and stuff like that, but the few songs I wanted in my ceremony, I am not sure if they are considered secular. They are not vulgar in any way, and a few of them do mention god, but they wouldn't be considered "religious" songs. Here are some of the songs I was considering. If anyone here knows these songs, and can tell me if they are secular, I would appreciate it. Even if you don't know these specific songs, but you can give me a clearer idea of what secular music is, I would also appreciate that. Thanks ladies, you have been very helpful with all my questions.
"We Must Be in Love" by Pure Soul, "24/7" by Kevon Edmonds, "All My Life" by KC and Jo Jo, "Spend My Life With You" by Eric Benet & Tamia, "You" by Jessie Powell, and "When I'm With You" by Tony Terry.

B2B, your song selections are wonderful!!! I do not see why these songs would/should be a problem with the church. My cousin got married in her church (she's also baptist) and she 1 of those songs there. Maybe you should run the songs past your pastor and see what he/she says. (Do you have them all on one CD?) Honestly, I don't think they will be a problem.
Thank you Sept. There are so many beautiful songs out there, it was hard to narrow it down.
No I don't have them on 1 cd yet, but I am working on that now. I am supposed to submit my song lyrics to the church a month before the wedding, but I think I am going to send it to them next week. I need to know soon if the songs are going to be ok, or do I have to find all christian songs.
Once I finish getting them all on one cd, I am going to send the cd with the lyrics. Hopefully they'll let me use them.
My soloist is a male, and I am looking for a nice christian love song for him to sing, so any suggestions would also be appreciated.
*If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything*
Hey Bride2be805, I love the songs on your list. I don't see anything wrong with them either. However, you are wise to submit your list to the church as soon as possible. Good luck.

I totally agree with the other ladies...run it the clery and see what they say. It really should not be a problem if they are respectable clean songs. I tell you I am a christian and every now and then I like to listen to nice soft R&B music...I don't think that anything is wrong with it once the lyrics are clean.
Charlotte wishes you all a beautiful Christmas filled with loads of love, laughter and the true meaning of this blessed season.
Well said Charly!

there is asong on the New Madeas cd by Johnny Gill it's a wedding song and it does mention God. Also you can use Ruben Studdards "Center of My Joy" it's a beautiful song
B2B,I love "You" by Jesse Powell.I think it's an excellent selection especially if your soloist can "sang".
Born Blessed!
All of the songs you chose are great book still secular. I'd like to know who decides what's what when it comes to music. Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Donnie McClurklin(spelling), BeBe and CeCe(the Relationships CD) all have songs that could all cross over to secular. But because they are gospel artist no questions are asked. ME personally, I'd go with Inspirational Music, and all your sellections fall into that category. Put a CD together and let them hear your music.

That's the song he actually sang in the movie during the wedding scene....Lord have mercy!...the weding scene...hmmm the wedding scene.

Thank you ladies.
I just listened to the Ruben Studdard song and the Johnny Gill song and they both are great. You helped me choose one of the songs my soloist will sing (Johnny Gill, You for Me). Thanks again!

My pastor told me that it is alright to listen to different kinds of music as long as you dont live your life by it or worship it. I think some songs are just really inappropriate to play inside a church and who would do that.I hope people have enough since not to play n o sex songs or making love or 1/2 on a baby in church. It might be yours and FH song but everything aint appropriate for a church. As far as the songs you picked I think they are great and I am glad you are not waiting until the last minute to give them a list and the lyrics that way you know what you can and cant use way ahead of time.Maybe go down there and listen to it with them and print a copy of the words for all who will attend. Then ask them for suggestions of songs they think are appropriate for the church.
I totally agree with you allies! I once attended a wedding of a friend who came down the aisle to "Let's get married" by Jagged Edge. It was so ghetto because the people in the audience started dancing and singing and the bride was raising her bouquet to the roof as she was walking down the aisle.

yes platinum, i am so serious! i think that now that she is saved she probably looks back and regret it. when she was in the limo waiting to go in the church she was rolling down the window telling folks that she didn't invite them and they better not go in the church for her wedding. like I said she is a saved woman now and nothing like that anymore but it was hilarious.

You may also want to consider using the instrumental versions of secular songs, a lot of the melodies are really beautiful and if you and your FH know the lyrics it could be like a secret message between the two of you.

I think I will play instrumental secular songs at my reception. The reception is also at my church. I don't like the nasty bump n grind songs anyway. Thanks b2b for asking. I was wondering the same thing.

How do you know when you are ghetto.........READ THE ABOVE!!!!
Charlotte wishes you all a beautiful Christmas filled with loads of love, laughter and the true meaning of this blessed season.
Speaking of ghetto, I went to a wedding once where after the bride and groom kissed, the bride turned around and said "I'z married now". I don't remember whether christian or secular music was being played. But,I do remember "booty music" played during the entire reception with no regard for the elderly guests.

Watch it nah!...that's the quote of the century...when I got married in 1994, I turned to my choir members and said "I'z Married naw"...girl that's a major thing especially when one has been waiting so long for true love......When I get married again, I'm gonna turn and say "I'z Really married now"...ha!

Well,in that case,work it,girl!

Charley you are too much...IZ REALLY MARRIED NOW.....ROTFLMAO......
There is a beautiful song by Bebe Winans and Angie Stone called "Miracle of Love" found on Bebe's CD and also soundtrack to Passion of the Christ. Not secular. Also, there is a song by John P. Kee called "The Wedding Song". Not secular. Finally, there are two albums called "With this Ring" and "With this Ring. . . Forever I Do" that have a large selection of Christian wedding music by Christian artists. While the songs you listed are great songs, they are definitely secular and you would be better off selecting something by a Christian artist since your pastor said no secular music.
Hey lawmansluv and welcome to the site! Thank you for your suggestions!

Hey Law and welcome to the site! I will have to check out the Bebe song and John P. Kee's too even though I've already decided on my music. Post the lyrics if you can. I purchased the With This ring Cd's and I'm using 3 songs (The One He Kept For Me, Everything, and Finally I for my ceremony. Both of those Cd's are awesome. When FH and and I are having a lazy Saturday morning cuddle session or when we're having a date night at home we turn them on. They are excellent love songs and not so cheesy that your FH won't like them.

I ordered the "With This Ring".. CD and it never came. I don't know if it got lost when I moved or what. I am following up with the company. I'm so anxious I feel like just buying another copy and letting FH listen too when we're home "having a date night". There is nothing like a good gospel song!

Rony, they are worth going out and purchasing again. I think I ordered mine back in December from Amazon. I love the idea of Christian love songs not all the bump and grind but just pure love and honor to god for bringing you together.
Ieasha that wedding was truly something to see! She's now a saved woman and you would never guess now that she did that at her wedding. God can change anyone! I know that because he changed me. I've done some things in my life that I look back on now and say what were you thinking. Where are you located?

Hey PB&J I went to YourMusic.com and reordered it for $5.99, shipping and handling is free. I agree it is worth buying again. I can't wait to get it! I want to start choosing music for our wedding soundtrack and I'm sure I will find some songs that I will like.
Delight yourself in The Lord & He will give you the desires of your heart!Ps 37
Rony, that's alot cheaper than I paid for mine. I hope you got both Cd's though. One is With this Ring and the other is With this Ring...Forever I Do. I must look at that site because it's too cheap. You know that's right up my alley!

Hi ladies.
B2B you've got to check out TD Jakes' CD, Sacred Love Songs. My girlfriend used a couple of his songs for her ceremony and they were totally appropriate. She had the same issue with her church and secular music. I have the CD, if I could somehow download it for you I would. But the songs talk about love, marriage, the three part relationship, man, woman and God, and so forth.

Yes Ivs that is a wonderful suggestion....I am a christian and for the longest time I thought listening to anything other than gospel was a sin...then I learned it wasn't...so as long as the song does not have anything nasty in it [casue come on nobody wants to hear about the size of one's booty at a wedding] there should not be a problem.
