Bridal Registry

I have been working on my registries and things are coming along great. I was checking other couple's websites at the knot to see where they are registered and get ideas, and one place I will be adding is Home Depot (power tools for him-something a friend of ours said he WISHED he added and other housing items). Another couple registered at Sandels resort for "gift cheques" for 25, 50 and 100 each and they got over 2000 as a result to go towards their honeymoon! Many couples are doing 4-5 places to register, and adding stuff like camping equipment, luggage etc....
Please share your registries or where you Plan to register, and also share any unique ideas/suggestions as far what else to add!
I am registered at:
Target, Macy's and Crate and Barrel. I plan to also register at Home Depot.

I want to register at a department store like Hechts. I want to get some nice heirloom things to give to my kids if we have any or my nieces. I also want to register at Target for the pratical stuff. We were both students so we still eat out of cans! just kidding. Registering for money can be tricky.

That is a unique wedding registry. Thats what I need. I dont need to register at Macy's, Sears, etc..., because I have been living on my own for a while and have household products, some I have never used just bought because I thought I needed it.

Well, I debated buying us things to get started but I decided that we can eat out of cans for another year and wait to see what we get. We are having a tiny affair (100) so I do not expect alot of gifts.

I'd rather get Amex gift cards or something like that. This way, I'm not limited to where I can use the cards. But, right now, I'm only registered at Macy's and I think I've only added around 4 things so far. The bank registry is a good one though.

You can register at those stores for Gift Cards:)
You may be surprised at how many you get! I would try it and see, and then have a relative spread the word discretly. We can all use some gift cards! The worst that can happen is that you get nothing.

No, I dont want anything from a store. I would like for people to just come and have a ball. I would like to have the money, but if people dont have it I just want them to have fun. I dont need any more junk to try to store away.

Askalot the AMEX gift cards sounds like a wonderful idea. I wonder do they have a program to do something like that. Anyway, I'm registered at Walmart, Macy's and Target

Re: Bridal Registry

I am not knocking those who shop for Walmart or the the ones who love to work there, but I have read and seen on TV that Walmart is trying to avoid providing health benefits for its employees. I also read that they were capping their wages and downgrading the workforce from full time to mostly part-time. I worked there briefly while in college and I liked it then. I feel that as a member of the working class I cannot support and company that treats its employees the way I am hearing that Walmart treats its people.

Re: Bridal Registry

I love shopping at WalMart, but its true they treat people like Dirt sometimes. But those who love working there are part of the fortunate few who have great store managers and regional managers. They have great stock options and decent health plans for full-timers but depending on the store customer service absolutely sucks. I have to go early so I can shop in a semi-clean store since in my college town people shop at 4-5AM-this is so I can maintain a sense of sanity.

I had stock when I worked there but as a full-time student I did not need the health insurance. But I feel that a company that size can do better and that by not demanding more from them we are opening the door for smaller companies to follow suit.

I know but I am tired of hearing about people who work but do not have health insurance. It sickens me. Many companies offer benefits that their average employee cannot afford. I live in Maryland so Walmart and my state are in a fight to the death over this issue.

I understand your reason for boycotting Mycenae. I do love Walmart. As an HR Manager I would say that it is up to Walmart's employees band together to do something about that. There is power in numbers. Sometimes you have to attack a problem from the inside out.

Re: Bridal Registry

So true so true all of you guys. I watched some kind of news brief on WalMart trying to open in China, but it was being boycotted (I think it failed though) at the time because it was going to put a lot of small businesses out. The way WalMart makes their money is distributing the products themselves (cut out the middleman) to their own stores from their own distributing centers and trucks so they can buy everything wholesale at the lowest price. Thats why we get stuff som cheap there. One of the ways they also pass along savings is to short cut their own employees now, thats why people are suing for clocking out then being told to work an hour or two extra, without pay. Its happened so wide scale its a shame. When I heard this I wanted to stop shopping at Walmart altogether because they make money because we flock over there to buy all that cheap stuff (those unknown or littl-known name brands of electronics, clothing, equipment, etc) which is all bought for little to nothing- (hence why their return policy is so favorable) and the little bit they charge us is still a huge profit because we buy LARGE QUANTITIES of it, and we impulse shop. I also learned that SAM's sell the same 300 products year-round (no more no less)and will rotate them depending on demand. We spend so much becasue we buy a lot of it. They (SAMS club) only take certain credit cards because its cheaper for them, but its an incovenience for people who do not carry Discover. So overall Walmart are cheapos, but they pass along the savings so we can THINK we are saving money, but we are really not becasue we buy so much at once. They want us to buy 100 cheap things at once instead of buying a few higher quality products at once....Thats why we get to the check out and realize we have 80+ worth of stuff we THINK we need....sorry I am on a soapbox today....I really try to avoid going there.

It was suggested I register there for the convenience of my guests but at the last minute i opted not to because shopping there just gives me a headache, and then I buy unnecessary stuff. I was going to get their highest quality things however, but my need for calm won out. Plus I went crazy in Target instead...but we won't talk about them today!

Mycenae and Bumble i feel the same way. i've never been a Wal-Mart gal but i understand why people shop there, it's probably really hard to resist. They treat their employees horribly and are especially hard on sistahs, refusing to hire black women with children or hiring them and then firing them if they take ONE day off for their kids. In terms of employees organizing, it's a well known fact that Wal-Mart fires staff members who promote unionizing. I'm not saying they're the only ones but they're not worried about bad publicity because they know Blacks don't change their shopping habits no matter how outraged they may be. Ok i'm climbing down of my soapbox. FYI: Walmart owns SAM's Club.

Re: Bridal Registry

I dont know what Walmart you ladies attend, However I know several people who work for this chain that have children and they have no complaints. And if you want to get technical there are numerous companies that discriminate. Even some designers discriminate and even went as far as saying they dont make there clothing for african americans and people still buy them. There are alot of companies that dont offer health insurance, life insurance, and receive minimum wage. Not saying that it is right but you have to do what you have to do in order to survive. I myself have worked jobs that didnt provide benefits, but I dealt with it until I got out of SCHOOL and got something better.

Re: Bridal Registry

If the way they treat their employess is so well known, why do these people choose to work there? Ex: A single mom needs a job. She has 2 choices, find a legit job or become a prostitute? Which would YOU choose? All I'm saying is, if someone isn't happy with their work situation, either they quit & find something else, or they stay and deal with it. I know there will be many people that disagree with me, but it is what it is.

Re: Bridal Registry

Climbing back on my soapbox...
Ya'll are right, sometimes when there a few choices, you choose the best you can to DO the best you can. HOUSE, you are right, not all WalMart employees complain. My FH mom works at WalMart and has been working there for years. She likes it but hates it....However, the benefits are great. SO sometimes its about weighing options. Plus, she lives in an area in Florida where the WalMarts are just better. I am from an area in FLorida where they aren't! You are also right about other companies and designers that discrimiate. Thats why its so important to be well educated about how these companies are run. Having a better understanding about what these companies do will help folks become better educated consumers, however, what some folks do with the knowledge is the part we can't control. I don't think WalMart is so very bad, because they provide jobs for people in places where they were not before, so they are boosting local economies-something they attempted, and eventually won out (I learned) in China. But there is always a cost. In some places, its other small business, in other areas, its the customer service! Thank God we live in a country where we have choices! They will always have my business, but just not as much as they used to, because food and products can be great, but I feel like great customer service is worth more. I know people who walk out of restaraunts with great food, but they lost their appetite for having to endure bad customer service. I have left shopping carts in the store for the same reasons. Its all about what matters most to you:)
Off the box...

I totally agree Askalot. If i had to, I'd work at walmart to feed my children but I'd also want people who can afford to put their money where their mouth is to fight for my rights because I can't. I don't have much to spend but I try to spend it in places that respect my business and work to keep me as a customer. So I don't buy from those designers or shop at those stores. Yeah its a lot of work and I don't expect anybody to do what I do but for me it's worth it. We all pick our battles and I think we can agree to disagree about Walmart.
