My engagement party is this Friday at 12:30 so I'll let you know how it goes. My Future MIL did all of the planning so I don't even know what will happen. She wants to surprise us.

Hello, I had my engagement party a couple of weeks ago. It turned out wonderful. In order for the families to mix up because people tend to navigate to who they know, we put sticky's under each chair with numbers on it. When everyone got in and seated they were told to pull the stickies and whatever number they had they had to go to that table. So both families ended up mixing really well. We ate, then everyone was told to find out the name and one thing their neighbor wanted them to know about themselves. It worked really well, people learned each others names, and it got everyone talking about what they had in common once the game was over.
The week after we got engaged our very close married friends threw us a barbeque to celebrate, but it was very informal, no presents (no registry was made yet!), and just very close family and friends. I think that we are very lucky to have such thoughtful friends because I didn't know if that was something I was supposed to plan or if family is supposed to plan it?!? I am definitely throwing one for my children though. I guess it is hard to because our family is so scattered for hundreds of miles.
Our engagement party was today and it was beautiful! My future MIL and FIL did all of the planning. I was just told to show up. It was an afternoon full of fun, friends, family and fellowship. The dj for the party is the same one that we are using for the wedding. He plays a good mix of gospel, r&b, reggae and hip hop. Everyone got up and started dancing. It really gave me a feel for what the reception will be like. It also allowed the bridesmaids and groomsmen to meet each other prior to any other events.
My parents and his parents gave very heartfelt speeches that had me on the verge of tears. One of my MOH's came in from Massachusetts so it was great to see her. The favors are adorable. (I'll take a pic of them later next week so you can see them.)
I didn't ask for the engagement party but I'm very thankful that we had it. We even got a lot of gifts that we didn't expect. God is good and blessed us with great friends and family.

I opted not to have an engagement party.
